One-sided transfers
In YNAB, a transfer is two rows, one on each account. YNAB's export doesn't link the two rows, so when you move from YNAB we pair them by date, amount and the two account names. When we can't find the other row, the transfer comes across with only one side: an ordinary transaction on the account we found, and nothing on the other account.
Why it happens
- The other account isn't in your export. For example, you closed or deleted it in YNAB, or renamed it after the transfer.
- The two rows don't match. The other account has no row with the same date and the opposite amount, for example because one side was edited in YNAB later.
- The transfer points to its own account.
The review screen tells you how many transfers have only one side before you create the budget.
What it changes
The account with the row has the right balance. The other account doesn't get the money in or out. If both accounts are in your budget, one of them will differ from YNAB by that amount, and the summary after the move names it.
How to fix it
- Open the new budget and go to the account the summary named.
- Find the transaction on the transfer's date with the transfer's amount. It has no payee and no category. In YNAB, that row's payee shows the other account's name.
- Delete it and add it again as a transfer between the two accounts, with the same date and amount.
If the other account was closed in YNAB and you don't need it, leave the transaction as it is: that account's balance doesn't matter any more.
